Quad Cities Winterization Guide for RVs and Boats
A Davenport winter is hard on anything left sitting: sub-zero nights, freeze-thaw swings, damp river air and five months without a run. This is the order we tell owners to work through before their rig goes into storage.
Most of the damage we see in the spring is not dramatic. It is a cracked water heater, a mildewed dinette cushion, a dead pair of batteries or a flat-spotted tire — all of it preventable in an afternoon in October.
Seven steps before it sits
Get every drop of water out of the plumbing
Davenport and Bettendorf spend most of January below freezing, and sub-zero stretches are normal. Drain the fresh tank, both grey and black tanks and the water heater, then blow the lines out with low-pressure air or push RV antifreeze through every fixture until it runs pink — including the shower, the outside spray port and the toilet valve. A split pex line behind a wall is the single most expensive thing a Quad Cities winter does to a camper.
Fog the engine and drain the block on the boat
On an inboard or sterndrive, drain the block and manifolds and run antifreeze through the raw-water circuit. On an outboard, tilt it fully down so the gearcase drains, then fog the cylinders. Water left in a lower unit freezes, expands and cracks the housing — and a Mississippi River season ends with cold water already in the pump.
Treat the fuel before the boat or rig sits
Fill the tank to about 95 percent to limit condensation, add stabilizer, and run the engine long enough to pull treated fuel through the injectors or carburetor. Ethanol fuel absorbs moisture over a five-month layup, and a half-empty tank in an unheated space is where phase separation starts.
Plan for humidity, not just cold
The Quad Cities swing between damp fall air and hard freezes, and the freeze-thaw cycle is what grows mildew inside a closed cabin. Leave interior cabinets and the fridge propped open, pull soft goods and bedding out entirely, and put a desiccant tub in the cabin. Covered and enclosed storage keeps snowmelt off the roof seams — the other half of the same problem.
Keep the batteries alive
House and chassis batteries self-discharge faster in the cold and a fully discharged flooded battery can freeze. Either pull them and keep them on a tender at home, or store somewhere you can plug a maintainer in at the bay. This is the most common spring surprise for RV owners here — the rig is fine and the batteries are dead.
Take the load off the tires and the jacks
Inflate to the sidewall maximum, park on a paved and level surface, and cover the tires if they will sit in direct sun. Cold-weather flat-spotting is real on a rig that does not move from November to April, and a tongue jack parked on gravel sinks during the spring thaw.
Seal out mice before the first hard frost
Field mice move indoors in October across eastern Iowa. Steel wool the pass-throughs where wiring and plumbing enter the frame, remove every bit of food, and skip the poison — a mouse that dies inside a wall is worse than one that never got in.
When to do it in Davenport and Bettendorf
The first hard freeze in the Quad Cities typically lands in the second half of October, and the river ramps close not long after. Target the first two weeks of October for boats and late October for campers, so you are working in daylight and above 40°F rather than chasing a cold snap. Spring de-winterization usually starts in mid-April here.
Where the rig spends those months matters as much as the checklist. Covered and enclosed storage keeps snow and ice off roof seams and slide toppers, keeps UV off sidewalls and tires, and keeps the whole thing off a residential driveway where most Davenport and Bettendorf ordinances do not want it parked anyway.
